Who’s in Trouble in the Premier League Relegation Fight?

The race to avoid relegation is fierce, with the bottom three sides in real danger of joining Birmingham City and Blackpool at the bottom of the Premier League table. Data experts Gracenote have used their stats to assess each team’s chances for survival based on the final seven matches, providing us with a percentage chance that each side would succeed.

Wolves

Wolves are embroiled in a relegation fight that will be difficult to win. Their last five games have ended in losses, with their only victory coming against Tottenham on October 14. The Molineux side have lost five out of their last six matches and face an uphill battle to stay up.

Wolves face a challenging slate of fixtures and must take advantage of their three ‘winnable’ games on the road. After holding on to victories against Birmingham and Sunderland, Wolves now need points from Aston Villa and Stoke to stay in contention come May.

Wolves’ lack of cutting edge makes it hard for them to escape the drop. Additionally, their poor xG score is an alarming indication that they have few quality chances to win games.

Leeds

Leeds are still under pressure to secure Premier League status for the 2023/24 season and could face a relegation battle soon enough. Simon Grayson believes their survival prospects depend on how well they perform in their remaining matches of this season.

Javi Gracia is hoping to rescue Leeds FC from this relegation battle. Since taking charge six games into the season, he has won three matches – including a 2-1 triumph against Southampton.

Leeds moved up five places to 13th in the table after winning their first game under Gracia. The Spaniard was helped by a rejuvenated Harrison, who scored his third goal in four games, and an amazing solo effort from Sinisterra who slid past Neco Williams to curl a shot into the top-right corner.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace and Southampton are only four points apart in this Premier League season, creating one of the tightest relegation fights ever. But will they make it out unscathed?

Palace have plenty of reasons to be optimistic, but there is still much work to do. Roy Hodgson’s side are in for an intense final stretch with six-pointers against every team in the bottom eight.

Leicester City have already been defeated this season, with Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring a late goal to give them their first league victory since New Year’s Eve.

However, they haven’t won since their last game, suffering losses to Watford and Liverpool. Additionally, with Wilfried Zaha’s contract set to expire this summer, there are doubts over his future at Selhurst Park.

Everton

FiveThirtyEight estimates that up to 40% of Premier League clubs could potentially face relegation this season. They analyze data and use their Forecasts and Soccer Power Index (SPI) ratings to predict each round of matches and how the final standings will look in advance.

Everton have a chance to avoid relegation with a win at Manchester United on Saturday. Unfortunately, they’ve had some bad luck lately – winning only Southampton and Leicester while losing three out of their last four matches.

Everton still have a chance for survival if they keep winning at home, according to manager Sean Dyche. With his side showing signs of resilience in recent weeks and Goodison Park providing such an advantage, Dyche’s side should be able to deliver results from a strong defensive base with improved consistency.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest are in a precarious position to drop into the Championship after Steve Cooper’s team were defeated 2-0 at Leeds on Tuesday night. With their winless record and 63% chance of relegation after one season back in the Premier League, Nottingham Forest could potentially be heading for a swift exit from their current status.

Evangelos Marinakis has been patient with Cooper, even giving him a new contract last October, but the Greek’s patience is running thin. Now with two significant relegation matches against Wolves and Leeds approaching in two weeks, Cooper’s future looks increasingly precarious.

Forest’s fans remain committed to their manager keeping them up, and this midweek match with Leeds offers them the chance to secure three points. One month will pass before Forest faces another relegation rival, so Forest cannot afford a loss here.
