What is a Snapchat streak?

Snapchat was the first social platform to introduce Stories. However, Instagram and Facebook soon caught up and introduced their own versions of this super popular feature. In an attempt to take the game further and keep its users on board and engaged, Snapchat introduced Snapstreak soon after.

In this article, we’ll investigate what a Snapstreak is, how to start and maintain one, and what the rules of the game are. We will also explore if it affects your Snapchat score.

snapstreak 101

For the uninitiated, a Snapstreak is a series of snaps that you exchange with a friend on Snapchat. The rules of the game are very simple and easy to follow. You just need to send a snap to your friend you are streaking with every 24 hours to keep the game alive. They also have to send you a snap within 24 hours so as not to break the Snapstreak.

This feature was introduced in 2016, with version 2.0 of the chat. It was an obviously successful attempt to keep people on the platform and engage with each other on a regular basis.

You can have Snapstreaks with as many friends as you want and Snapchat will automatically keep score. You just need to send and receive snaps regularly and your Snapstreaks will flourish. Additionally, Snapchat takes Snapstreaks into account when calculating your Snapchat score. So if you are worried about your score or want to improve it, start scratching.

How does it work?

It’s very easy to start a Snapstreak; you just need to send a snap (not a chat message) to a friend. If they respond within 24 hours, you’re on your way to starting a Snapstreak. If you both send another Snap to each other within 24 hours of your first Snaps, congratulations, you’ve started a Snapstreak. A fire emoji will appear next to your names on your friends lists, indicating that you have a Snapstreak with someone.

To keep the Snapstreak going, they need to snap to each other at least once within 24 hours of their last respective snaps. Snapchat will count down the days and add numbers next to the fire emojis. For example, if your Snapstreak has been running for 17 days, the number 17 will be located next to the fire emoji.

When you reach day 100 of the Snapstreak, Snapchat will reward your commitment to the Snapstreak with a number 100 next to the fire emoji. If you make it to 500 days, you’ll get the mountain emoji that tells everyone your relationship is rock solid.

It’s worth noting that any photo will be a snapshot, even a blank one. As long as you send one, your Snapstreak will continue to grow. Also, you can send the same photo every time and it will still count. For example, you can take a photo, write “Snapstreak” and send it to all your friends you are Snapstreaking with.

Snapstreak Rules and Limitations

To make the Snapstreak game more interesting, Snapchat has set some limitations on what does and doesn’t count towards your Snapstreak count. Here is a brief description of the limitations and restrictions:

  1. Chat messages Snapchat has ditched text messages in a bid to increase user camera activity on the platform. You can chat with your special friend or friends as much as you want, but the chat messages you send will not count toward Snapstreak.
  2. Memories have also been discarded. His job is to remind you of the good times he had in the past. Therefore, if he shares a memory with his friend, it won’t count.
  3. You can post a story on Snapchat whenever you want, but it won’t be considered a valuable streak plugin, even if the friend you’re crossing with sees it.
  4. Chat group. Just like one-on-one chats, text messages posted in group chats also don’t count toward your Snapstreak with someone. Snapshots sent to group chats also don’t count.
  5. Content you send to the friend you’re going through Spectacles with doesn’t count toward your streak.

What happens if you forget to snap?

In case you forget to snap your BFF today, Snapchat will remind you that your Snapstreak is about to snap. You’ll see an hourglass emoji next to your friend’s name in your Recents list. The emoji will appear several hours before the 24-hour window closes. If you submit a snap time, your streak continues.

However, if you miss the notification and forget to submit a snap before the deadline, your Snapstreak is broken. It can be disappointing to see a 300 or 500 day streak go to waste because you forgot to submit a plugin one day. However, Snapchat allows you to start a new streak with the same person right away.

To those about to shoot, we salute you

Remember, starting a Snapstreak is easy, as it only takes two days and two snapshots of each participant. Keeping it up is easy, too, and Snapchat even reminds forgetful veterans that their stripes are about to expire. Finally, having several long streaks can increase your Snapchat score.
