Things that Psychiatrist needs to get informed about Depression

  1. If you feel sad, that does not mean you are suffering from depression

Sadness is normal emotion – and so very obvious to many of the experiences that we all have.

Being sad is such a common emotion – and so very obvious to many of the experiences that we all have. What would it be never to feel sad? We may not enjoy feeling low, but it would be strange not to have experienced it. So we are all sad at times, and feeling low in mood is a very common experience we all have to deal with.

  1. Does not have to be a common cause for your depression

Though an episode of depression may be associated with a difficult life event such as the loss of a job, what is not so commonly understood is that clinical depression can also be triggered by experiences that are not necessarily associated with recognizably saddening events.

  1. Feelings of sadness have not always been a reason for depression

Like many mental health conditions, some people have a lot of difficulties admitting that they have a problem, even to themselves. Depression can be revealed in many ways: for example:

  • Always feeling tired
  • Having sleep difficulties
  • Losing your appetite
  • Losing your sex drive
  • Just losing interest in doing anything
  • Getting irritable or just feeling agitated all the time
  • Feeling that life isn’t worth living
  1. Reason and consequences – that can be other underlying situations resulting in your anxiety

Psychiatrists are always very aware that other mental health disorders, such as anxiety, or a neurodevelopmental condition like ADHD, can occur along with depression or cause that depression. Their breadth of understanding of mental illness makes the involvement of a psychiatrist in diagnosing a mental health condition so important.

  1. Antidepressants will not always be a solution for your depression

People are often anxious about taking antidepressants. Modern Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) can help many people manage their depression. They can be very effective, especially when used to treat a moderate to severe episode.

  1. Generally, Psychiatrist do not write antidepressants to everyone they observe with depression

Antidepressants are just one of the ways of helping with depression and are not right for everyone.

In a discussion for treatment, a psychiatrist will suggest which medications have the best evidence and may be best proven to you as an individual.

  1. You can’t just get rid of it – You do need to get support

Some people try to develop ways of coping with depression rather than seeking help. These can be proven effective in lessening the immediate discomfort, but they can lead to depression going on for more time. A psychiatrist will usually try to help people to find ways of healing from depression by changing such unhelpful coping mechanisms.

  1. There are other options available to you

Even if you are unable or unwilling to take the big step by seeing a psychiatrist, you should at least do more research. There are some internet resources on depression which range from providing information, personal accounts, and ways of promoting recovery.
