Rangers Win 2-0 at Hibernian in the Europa League

Rangers’ win at Hibernian was powered by James Tavernier converting his ninth spot kick of the season and Kemar Roofe’s stunner as both players scored penalties to take them through Group D’s qualification round with ease.

Michael Beale made two adjustments from the side that tied Aberdeen, with Ianis Hagi replacing Rabbi Matondo and Leon King taking up centre-back for Connor Goldson.

Goals

Rangers’ sunny disposition following their Old Firm victory quickly dimmed as wet and windy Glasgow weather took hold. The visitors looked in control in the opening quarter before Connor Goldson had his header blocked by Lawrence Shankland who mishit an attempted left foot lob from 35 yards out.

Tavernier scored the game’s inaugural goal when his magnificent free-kick flew straight into the top far corner, setting off their path towards success and setting them on their journey to a victory. This marked 17 goals scored this season as well as 13 assists – setting off their hosts on their journey toward glory!

Tavernier was at the centre of everything positive for the Gers as they extended their lead over Scottish Cup rivals. His penalty claim against Mark Hanlon just before half time was disapproved of by referee Steven McLean; Goldson then volleyed over after Tavernier crossed before Sakala drove past and Nisbet’s effort was blocked for close.

Hibs

Edinburgh derbies are of great significance to both clubs, with an especially special feeling when won by one from within the capital itself. Rangers produced an outstanding display as they capitalised when opportunities presented themselves whereas Hibs failed to capitalise.

Rangers captain James Tavernier celebrated his 400th competitive appearance by unleashing an extraordinary free-kick in the 33rd minute to give his side the lead. Anticipating that their home defense might expect a cross into the middle, Tavernier instead curled it near post with goalkeeper David Marshall having trouble keeping up.

After the break, Fashion Sakala forced Robby McCrorie into making an outstanding save with a low drive before Nisbet hit the side-netting with his stretch shot. Todd Cantwell then doubled Rangers’ advantage when he headed in from close range before John Lundstram forced Marshall into yet another fine save before Paul Hanlon completed their scoring late on – lifting Rangers ahead of Hearts and Aberdeen into second place for now while their title hopes rest with two further results across Europe before season’s end.

Gers

The Light Blues will move up one spot if they win and could still qualify for the Champions League group stage with victory over Aberdeen at Hampden next month. But for that to occur they will have to win their remaining six matches and hope other results go their way.

Tavernier was involved in early chances for the visitors, her cross causing problems for Hibs’ defence and she and Brogan Hay creating individual chances which narrowly missed. Hibs striker Fashion Sakala forced Marshall into making a save from an aggressive low drive as hosts started making inroads but could not break through Gers backline.

Michael Beale’s side made an excellent start after 15 minutes, as Arnot produced an exquisite left-footed strike from outside the penalty area that Hagi turned into the net for an equaliser.

Substitutions

Rangers and Hibernian have enjoyed an enduring rivalry since meeting for the first time 344 times; Rangers currently lead by an overwhelming 138-135 margin over Hibs! The competition between both clubs makes Scottish football even more compelling when both meet. The rivalry is an integral part of Scottish football that makes every meeting between these sides even more exhilarating!

No secret exists between these clubs, with numerous clashes taking place over time – and this match proved no exception.

Tony Mowbray made an improbable substitution, replacing Garry O’Connor with Ivan Sproule at just under one quarter remaining as Hibs held onto an early lead. It proved decisive; Ivan Sproule played a vital part in both goals as Hibs came back and defeated Rangers late on; with one even looping over goalkeeper Marciano before hitting off the post for an incredible score!
