Microblading Tattoo Removal: What to Expect

Every now and then, a microblading job doesn’t go so well and the client isn’t happy with the outcome or the results. When that happens, they have one of two options.

One option is just to live with it until the microblading fades away 12 to 18 months later.

The other is to pursue microblading removal.

If you’ve chosen the second option, here’s what to expect.

Expect to Do Some Shopping Around

Don’t go back to the technician who just botched your job. Obtain microblading removal services from a different technician.

Go through the same vetting process you’d go through before scheduling any cosmetic procedure, especially if you are hoping to get a new set of (correct) microblading tattoos done after the removal process.

Avoid DIY Microblading

Everyone wants to save money, and so DIY microblading might seem tempting.

Don’t do it.

Microblading and microblade removal require a licensed technician to prevent infection, scarring, and botched results. Plus, working on your own face with a blade, chemical, or laser is both uncomfortable and dangerous.

Leave it to the professionals.

How Microblading Removal is Done

Microblade removal breaks down the pigment of tattooed eyebrows. The goal is to lighten or completely remove the pigment so the skin can return to its natural color.

There are three methods.

First, the technician can opt for a dermaplane razor. The technician would gently scrape the top layer of skin to remove all the pigment.

Second, the technician could opt for laser removal to break down the pigment in the tattooed area. The laser breaks down the pigment into smaller pieces. The body then flushes the pigment through the immune system naturally, removing it.

Third, the technician could opt for a chemical solution. The technician applies the solution to your eyebrows to break down the pigment much as a laser would.

All three methods could require multiple sessions to provide the right results. Most people need somewhere between two to six sessions to achieve optimal results, and must wait eight weeks between sessions to give the skin time to heal each time.

Does microblading removal hurt?

Some clients experience a burning or stinging sensation during the procedure. You should communicate closely with your technician throughout the process to ensure that you remain comfortable.

After the procedure, you may experience a few days of minor redness and swelling, as well as a little crusting and scabbing. Don’t itch or pick at your brows as this can result in scarring.

How do you prepare for microblade removal?

Start by doing your research so you can find a licensed, reputable technician. Once you’re satisfied that you’ve found a professional you can trust and have scheduled the appointment, you should take the following steps.

  • Avoid sun exposure
  • Stop using skincare products containing retinol, glycolic acid, or salicylic acid
  • Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications, including aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen
  • Consult with your doctor if you are on any prescription blood thinners, or if you have any chronic medical conditions

Sun exposure and certain skincare products can increase your skin sensitivities. Blood-thinners could cause you to bleed more than is desirable during the course of the procedure.

Finally, it’s important to manage your expectations. Microblading removal requires patience. It may require multiple sessions. Results will take time. If you’re prepared for the amount of time it may take, you’re less likely to feel frustrated and discouraged.

Can I get microblading again after undergoing microblade removal?

Absolutely! You just need to let the area heal completely before you re-tattoo it. Most people have to wait at least 8 weeks from their final microblade removal session to schedule their next microblading session.

Start With a Consult

Microblading removal is just like any other cosmetic procedure: you should plan on booking a consultation session before the procedure itself. Don’t expect to just walk into the spa on your lunch break to get the job done.

Reputable technicians will insist on this session anyway. Plus, it may even help you save some money; the technician may see a way to correct the shape of your eyebrows without requiring weeks of removal, simply by adding a little more pigment or making other adjustments.

Be ready to articulate exactly what’s bothering you about your current eyebrow job, and to look for the right solutions for solving the problem.
