Dunning, who started this season as a reliever pitcher, joined the starting rotation in May after deGrom was injured and has been doing well as a starting pitcher. He has been performing well this season with an earned run average of 2.69 in 18 games (10 starts) 80⅓ innings and 26 runs (24 earned).
