HOW MANY TYPES OF CARPENTRY JOBS ARE THERE?

Being one of the oldest professions, the responsibilities and specificizations of carpenters have changed in the past to tackle many different issues. Carpenter traditionally worked on the construction of timber structures – cutting, shaping and fitting the timber needed for building framing.

Since carpentry has grown along with joinery, the number of job opportunities for carpenters has also grown. Carpentry today isn’t just about the construction of frames and forms, it also involves also the installation of small wooden furniture and fittings as well. The job of a carpenter nowadays equally likely to involve the installation of banisters and forms as it is for building frames. Therefore, it’s important to be aware of the various types of jobs in carpentry in order to begin work on your own construction project.

FIRST FIX WORK: THE FIRST CARPENTRY JOBS

The vast array of carpentry jobs that are required in the same construction project typically requires the expertise of carpentry specialists. A rough carpenter can perform the basic carpentry tasks on a variety of large projects. The responsibilities of rough carpenter are associated with structural work that involves forms and framing; building the precise, frame structures of buildings.

Carpenters rough who specialize in the construction of frameworks are usually called framers. In addition to framing, there is the job of a joister. A joister is the person who lays floor joists to allow the construction of a floor that is flat. The work of roofers might also be included under the category of rough carpentry. However, typically, shingling and other roofing materials are added at a later time. “First fix” work is the title given to these roles since they are finished before the first internal surfaces are made using concrete and plaster. A different “first fix” role is a ship’s woodworker, who specialize in working on boats and ships.

SECOND FIX WORK: WHERE CARPENTRY MEETS JOINERY

Following the first fix work and following the initial work of plasterers, comes the “second fix’ task. The majority of this work will be done by carpenters who trim. Their responsibilities include the fitting of mouldings and trims including mantles and skirting boards. The other work done by trim carpenters could include banisters and handrails and doors, doorframes, and sills.

Second fix carpentry can be completed in conjunction with the electrical and plumbing work of electricians and plumbers. The utility lines and outlets can be installed alongside a carpenter’s working on architraves, skirting and doors. Carpenter jobs will need to reflect those of the last type of carpenter: cabinet makers. Cabinet makers’ work will be incorporated into the house following the majority of the second repair work is completed.
