How are companies across various industries hiring

The employment scene in India varies from industry to industry, and the methods used for recruiting employees also tend to vary from industry to industry. While, as a general trend, digital recruitment platforms (staffing and recruiting companies), company websites and internal referrals, etc., are among the most common methods used by employers, there are several other options too.

An understanding of various methods used for recruitment within a particular sector can help the recruiters in that sector to optimize their recruitment practices better. On the other hand, it can also help people looking for employment in that sector.

So, let’s take a look at the most common methods used by recruiters in some of the most prominent sectors of the country:

  • Digital recruitment platforms

The recent trends suggest that digital recruitment platforms are the most popular vehicle among recruiters. According to Decoding Jobs Sectoral Reports 2023 Compendium by Taggd, 27 percent of the recruitments in the Automobile sector in 2022 were made that way. It was 28 percent in Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) services, 27 percent in the pharmaceutical sector, and 29 percent in Global In-house Centre (GIC) sector. In each of these sectors, digital recruitment platforms were the best source of recruitment.

A significant advantage is that a good digital recruitment platform can be used to find all types of employees – including highly skilled ones. As long as you choose the right digital platform, you can find the desired talent in a limited timeframe. That is not something that can be said about some other options like internal referrals and job fairs. It is also the most cost-effective method of recruitment in most categories and industries across various sectors.

Digital recruitment platforms are likely to grow even more potent as a means of recruitment in the next few years by leveraging AI recruitment tools. The AI tools may help job portal optimize the use of databases and improve the discoverability of the best talent through digital recruitment platforms.

  •  Company website and internal referrals

The internal sources of referrals formed the second most popular medium of recruitment – owing its popularity primarily to the lower cost of this method wherever the option is available. It is actually clubbing together two different methods – the company’s website, which leverages internet penetration, and internal referrals, which leverage the contacts of the existing workforce.

Apart from digital recruitment platforms, this was the only other method of recruitment that accounted for over twenty percent of recruitment in several sectors.

As per Decoding Jobs Sectoral Reports 2023 Compendium by Taggd, it accounted for nearly 26 percent of recruitments in the IT sector in 2022 (next only to digital recruitment platforms, which accounted for 28 percent of recruitments). It also accounted for twenty-one percent of recruitments in the Pharma sector, seventeen percent in Internet businesses, and twenty-six percent in the Manufacturing and Engineering sector. Except for Internet businesses, which held the third position, this method was the second most popular choice of recruitment for each of them.

  • Campus hires

Campus placements are another popular medium of recruitment for employers, especially when it comes to recruiting youngsters and freshers. Campus hires are often not ideal for jobs where experience may be desirable.

This vehicle of recruitment was the third most popular method of recruitment in Internet businesses, according to Decoding Jobs Sectoral Reports 2023 Compendium by Taggd, with 18 percent of employees hired this way in 2022. It also accounted for the third most popular medium for the GIC sector, with 14 percent of recruitments in the Automotive sector and ten percent of recruitments each in the BFSI sector and IT sector in the same period.

  • Social media

Social media is increasingly emerging as a popular method of recruiting talent in employer recruitment of several sectors. Social media is likely to emerge as a powerful way of finding skilled gig jobs as well. A certain amount of social media skills from talented potential employees is often desirable if they want to be discovered by social media.

According to Decoding Jobs Sectoral Reports 2023, Compendium by Taggd, social media accounted for nearly thirteen percent of recruitments in the GIC sector, ten percent of recruitments in the Automotive sector, fifteen percent of total recruitment in the internet business, and eight percent of recruitments in the BFSI sector in 2022.

  • Consultants

Consultants have also served as a good tool for recruitment across various sectors. As per Decoding Jobs Sectoral Reports 2023 Compendium by Taggd, it accounted for sixteen percent of recruitments in the pharma sector and eleven percent of recruitments in the IT sector in 2022.

  • Job Fairs and direct walk-in

Job fairs and direct walk-ins have traditionally served as a popular medium of recruitment. This method accounted for twenty-three percent of recruitments in the manufacturing and industrial sector and fourteen percent of recruitments in the Pharma sectors in 2022 (According Decoding Jobs Sectoral Reports 2023 Compendium by Taggd).

However, in some other sectors, it only accounted for significantly lesser percentages. For example, it only accounted for three percent of recruitments in the automotive and BFIC sectors in the same period (Decoding Jobs Sectoral Reports 2023 Compendium by Taggd). This decline in their popularity may be owed to their inefficiency in finding skilled recruits.

Wrapping up!

To wrap up, employers have several options when it comes to finding their employees. That said, digital recruitment platforms will remain the most popular medium of hiring in 2022, and this trend is only going to grow stronger in the coming years.

However, this pattern begs the question – which is the best digital recruitment platform? The answer shall be subjective, but as a general rule, Taggd has emerged as the best digital recruitment platform in the past few years. With over half a million permanent recruitments across fourteen industries, according to Taggd Capability Deck, it has proven itself a capable partner for recruiters trying to find the best talent in the market.
