“I don’t want to be a consolation prize in Budapest,” said Catherina Johnson-Tompson, 30, Great Britain.

At the conclusion of the women’s heptathlon at the Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championships, Johnson-Tompson was crowned and congratulated by her competitors and the crowd at the Budapest National Stadium in Hungary.

Johnson-Thompson totaled 6,740 points in the two-day, seven-event heptathlon to win the title over Anna Hall (22-USA) with 6,720 points.

Thompson won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.50 (1,050 points), the high jump in 1.86 (1,054 points), the shot put in 13.64 (770 points), the 200 meters in 23.48 (1,31 points), the long jump in 6.54 (1,20 points), the javelin in 46.14 (785 points) and the 800 meters in 2:05.63 (1,30 points).

Johnson-Tompson won in Doha in 2019 with 6,981 points, but has since struggled with an Achilles tendon injury and its after-effects.

At the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Johnson-Tompson collapsed in severe pain in her calf during the 200-meter race. She got back up and slowly walked to the finish line, finishing in 93 seconds.

Her heptathlon teammates waited for her at the finish line and embraced her as soon as she finished.

Johnson-Tompson was disqualified for running out of her lane. The injury prevented him from competing in the rest of the race.

His fight inspired the world, but Johnson-Tompson says, “I was very grateful for the support, but not being able to finish was devastating for the athletes.”

Johnson-Tompson finished eighth at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene.

“I’m more excited than I was in Doha in 2019,” Johnson-Tompson told the BBC after returning to the world championships after a four-year absence. “After back-to-back disappointing performances in Tokyo and Eugene, I had promised myself, ‘I’m not going to break my heart,’ but I was never completely free of the pain. I finally won the gold medal. Today I am very happy,” she said.

The BBC said: “In 2021 and 2022, no one criticized Johnson-Tompson. But no one expected him to return as champion.” “Johnson-Tompson’s ‘Olympic gold dream’ remains. With this win, we can now look forward to Johnson-Tompson winning gold in Paris in 2024.”

Joshua Cheptegei (26-Uganda) won the men’s 10,000-meter final in 27:51.42 to beat Daniel Ebeneho (28-Kenya) in 27:52.60 for his third consecutive title.

He is only the fourth man to win three consecutive world titles in the event, joining Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele (four in a row, Ethiopia) and Mo Farah (three in a row, Great Britain).

“This is my last World Championships track event,” said Cheptegei, who is preparing to transition to the marathon, “so this win is even more precious.”

Ivana Buleta (33-Serbia) took first place in the women’s long jump with a leap of 7.14 meters.

After a string of world-leading finishes, including third at the 2013 Moscow and 2015 Beijing World Championships and third at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, but no wins, Buleta broke her “major competition drought” in Budapest.

Tara Davis-Hall (USA), 24, was second at 6m91 and Alina Rotaru-Cotman (Romania), 30, third at 6m88.

Ethan Katzberg (21-Canada) won the men’s hammer throw with a throw of 81.25 meters. It is the first time a Canadian has won a medal in the men’s hammer throw at a World Championships.

Tokyo Olympic champion Wojciech Nowitzki (34-POL) won silver with 81.02m and Benzse Halas (26-HUN) took bronze with 80.82m.

Paweł Paidek (34-Poland), who won five consecutive world titles in the event, finished fourth in 80m00.

Paidek challenged Sergey “The Human Bird” Bubka (Ukraine) for the world record for consecutive individual titles in the men’s pole vault (six), but failed to finish on the podium in Budapest. 토토사이트
