Beginners Guide for Charts and How to make it in Microsoft Word

The best thing about Microsoft Word is that it has no restrictions for any particular system. For example, there are many operating systems that are only available for windows. Same as there are some systems that are just for Apple operating systems. But Microsoft Word is accessible for Windows and Apple operating systems. Most of the users call it just ‘Word’. Another common word for Microsoft Word is ‘MS Word.’ It is a word-processing application.

Chart in Microsoft Word

For creating a chart, you have different options. You can make a chart in Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Word. It is up to you what is feasible for you. Most of the people prefer to use Excel for this purpose. They do not even have an idea that they can make charts on Microsoft Word too. Recent research showed that 37% of students in different UK universities got assignment help because they did not know about using charts in their university assignments.

There are two main aspects of making charts in Microsoft Word. The first one is to select data and make chart. The same way, second way is to go for charts and select required one. And then add data for it. Let’s discuss chart types and their features.

Column charts

The most commonly used type of chart is a column chart. On X and Y sides, you have to ensure the correct values. In X-axis, you have to add categories. While in Y-axis, you are required to put data values. It has further two types as follows,

  • Clustered column
  • 3-D clustered column
  • Stacked column
  • 3-D stacked column
  • 100% stacked column
  • 3-D 100% stacked column
  • 3-D column

As per the requirement, you need to select one type. Use the following path for making column charts,

Line Chart

When the collected data is in the form of rows as well as columns, you can use a line chart for it. Line charts divide such data very evenly. On X-axis, you are supposed to add independent values. And Y-axis covers dependent values. Line chart also have further categories as follow,

  • Line
  • Line with markers
  • Stacked line
  • Stacked line with markers
  • 100% stacked line
  • 100% stacked line with markers
  • 3-D line

You need to select the chart type wisely. For example, you should go for the line chart if you have multiple data series. Same as if you have only one series of values, it’s better to use a stacked line chart. Same as you have to see which type is best suitable for what type of data series. In the path of Insert-charts-template- select chart type, the second chart type is ‘line chart’. So it will become as follow,

Pie Charts

A pie chart is ensured when you present percentages in unmodified form. In other chart types, you can ensure the presentation of data changes. But in pie chart, you cannot do that. Use pie chart when there is no negative and zero value in your data. pie chart has some types as follows,

  • Pie
  • 3-D pie
  • Pie of pie
  • bar of pie

You may check the basic information of any website in the form of pie chart. Use following path for making pie charts

Bar Charts

A bar chart is preferred when you have data in range or duration. Also, you may have long labels for your data.

  • Clustered bar
  • 3-D clustered bar
  • Stacked bar
  • 3-D stacked bar
  • 100% stacked bar
  • 3-D 100% stacked bar

You can plot bar with the help of worksheet data. Here you are supposed to add values in X-axis. It can be in the form of sets. And you have to categorise it as per requirement. This chart is very beneficial for comparing things.

Area Charts

Area chart is a combination of two charts. The first one is line chart. While the second one is bar chart. You can present your data in 2-D as well as in 3-D form. It is used to show the dependency of one factor on another. You can check how one factor has changed because of a change in the second factor. Mostly the second factor is taken as time. But it can be changed too.

  • Area
  • 3-D area
  • Stacked area
  • 3-D stacked area
  • 100% stacked area
  • 3-D 100% stacked area

Here each chart type has some differences from others.

Surface Charts

The purpose of surface chart is to check the optimum value in any data value. You can see the common use of surface charts in maps. For example, its use is common in the top[ogarphical maps. There all the patterns with the same values have same indication. Like, their colour and presentation remain the same on the whole map.

Just like all other charts, surface charts also have some types. Types of surface charts are given below.

  • 3-D surface
  • Wireframe 3-D surface
  • Contour
  • Wireframe contour

Use the following path for making surface charts

Many are many other types of charts. Like, Bubble Charts and X-Y Scatter Charts. It also includes Stock Charts and Doughnut Charts. The path to making charts remains same. You just have to select the required chart type.
