Richies Mobile Café has an intriguing backstory. It all began in 2014 in Wiesbaden, Germany, where I, an active duty US Soldier, and my wife shared a common love for exceptional coffee. However, we were disappointed by the limited options from mainstream coffee chains like Starbucks, Dunkins Donut, and local coffee shops. Determined to find the perfect brew, we embarked on months of research and education, immersing ourselves in coffee-making, barista skills, marketing, and business.
During our quest, we were fortunate to have a family friend who owned a mobile coffee business in Hanover, Germany. Every week, he would serve the most exquisite coffees from a mobile platform at the local farmers market, using manual lever machines that generated their heat. The flavors he achieved were unparalleled, and we were captivated by the idea of bringing this unique experience to the United States.
Inspired by our friend’s success, we created Richies Mobile Café, combining our passion for exceptional coffee with our military background. We chose the iconic Piaggio APE, a classic three-wheel vehicle with a retro-modern look, as our delivery platform for events and shows. Its Italian heritage perfectly complemented our pursuit of finding the best Italian blend of coffee.
After extensive travel to various roasters and countless tasting sessions, we finally discovered a local roaster near Frankfurt, Germany, whose coffee met our exacting standards. This robust blend was specially crafted to satisfy the palates of our primary customer base: the US Soldiers and Civilians stationed at the US Military Base in Wiesbaden, Germany. We understood their desire for a bolder and larger portion of coffee than what was typically offered locally, and Richies Mobile Café was there to deliver.
2015 we debuted with a red, custom-fitted Piaggio Ape equipped with a professional semi-automatic Fierenzato Ducale two-group coffee machine. This magnificent setup became our pride and joy, our version of a luxurious Mercedes Benz. With this mobile coffee station, we catered to various local events, including weddings, markets, and even the prestigious Frankfurt auto show. We were entrusted to run the coffee station for the German Minister of Transportation’s display. Our coffee was so popular on the first day of the show that it drew large crowds, eventually causing the Minister to restrict access to our station. People were coming from far and wide, bypassing other coffee vendors at the conference solely to savor our exceptional brews.
Since our establishment in the spring of 2015, we have evolved and upgraded our coffee shop. We transitioned from the three-wheeled Piaggio Ape to a fully functional mobile coffee shop trailer. This transformation allowed us to serve better the needs of the US Military Garrison in Germany, providing them with a unique and convenient coffee experience wherever they may be.
One of the distinguishing features of Richies Mobile Café is our creative menu. We take inspiration from the military and government, naming our drinks with themes like “Abrams,” “Top Secret,” “FBI,” “Paladin,” and “First Sergeant.” These names reflect our commitment to honor our military roots and pay tribute to the brave men and women who serve our country.
