Review of Tarla, a Sweet Biopic of One of India’s Most Famous Celebrity Chefs

There’s a strong chance that Tarla Dalal’s name rings a bell with you whether or not you consider yourself a foodie because the late connoisseur was well-known in India at one point. Dalal wrote more than 100 cookbooks in multiple languages, appeared on popular food shows, taught cooking lessons, and in her later years, developed a fervent online following. In the biography Tarla, actress Huma Qureshi portrays the well-known vegetarian cook.

The movie primarily focuses on Dalal’s path from being a typical housewife to becoming well-known, rather than her enormous success following the premiere of her popular cooking show.

Interestingly, the biography begins in a classroom with a young Tarla Dalal imagining a backstory for her extraordinary journey. She is driven to achieve something in life but is unsure of what it might be. Here is my review of the biography without any spoilers.

The Gujarati chef is convincingly portrayed by Huma Qureshi.

Huma Qureshi, an actor well known for her work on Monica and O My Darling, has expertly slipped into the role of Dalal thanks to not just her Gujarati accent and good features, but also her body language. She begins as a typical homemaker doing the never-ending household chores that come with being middle-class. Qureshi also appears to have struck the ideal mix between Dalal’s brash and self-assured demeanor and the trepidation of a lady preparing to defy the strongly held beliefs
