IELTS vs Duolingo: Which One is Better for Indian Students?

Intro

Both IELTS and Duolingo are two popular English assessment exams. Every year tons of students appear for both exams. But what is the difference between both English assessment exams? So, to answer this question today we are going to learn about both these English assessment exams in depth. Furthermore, we will try to identify which English assessment exam is better than the other.

Basic Difference

The International English Language Testing System exam is of two types namely:

  • IELTS academic training exam
  • IELTS general training exam

But both these exams are quite identical. Moreover, the duration of both exams is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The only difference that you can spot in them is in their writing and reading sections. If we talk about the Duolingo exam then is an adaptive English proficiency exam. Thus, using it you can easily and accurately measure the proficiency of a candidate in the English language. Furthermore, in the exam with every right answer, the difficulty level of the exam increases unlike in the IELTS exam. The total duration of the Duolingo program is 1 hour. Format

The International English Language Testing Systema exam has four sections namely:

  • Listening
  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Speaking

However, you can’t complete the entire exam in one day. On the other hand, the Duolingo exam has two sections namely:

  • Adaptative test that includes four parts namely (listening, writing, reading, and speaking)
  • Video interview

Plus, you can complete the Duolingo exam in one single day.

Test Mode

International English Language Testing System Exam is conducted by IDP and Cambridge English. Moreover, you can give the IELTS exam online as well as offline. But if we talk about the Duolingo exam then it is conducted by the Duolingo company. Moreover, you can’t appear for the Duolingo exam offline.  You can give the Duolingo exam only online.

Listening Section

In the IELTS listening exam, the candidate has to listen to four recordings. After that, he has to answer a series of different questions. For instance, the test may include MCQ and sentence completion-type questions. On the other in the Duolingo exam students listen to a list of words. The list features real as well as pseudo-English words. After listening to the words, they have to identify real English words.  Besides this, they also get an audio recording for transcribing.

Writing Section

In the International English Language Testing System exam, the writing section features two tasks. In the first task, the candidate summarises a diagram or graph. Similarly, in the second task, the candidate writes an essay. However, in the Duolingo writing exam candidates have to find real English words from the list of pseudo-English words. After that, they have to use the found words for filling in the blanks in the questions. Apart from this, they also have to write an essay within a word limit of 500 words in the writing exam.

Speaking Section

The speaking section of the IELTS exam consists of three tasks. In the first task, the student has to answer some general questions regarding their education, family life, etc. Whereas in the second task the student has to speak on a specific topic for 2 minutes. After that, in the third task, the interviewer asks question-related about that topic from the candidate. However, in the Duolingo speaking exam, the student gets an image for describing. After that, they get some sentences that they have to read out aloud.  To learn how to score well on the speaking section of the International English Language Testing System exam feel free to join IELTS online training.
