Keira Walsh and Beth Mead Left Out of England World Cup Squad

Keira Walsh made headlines for her passing that assisted Ella Toone to score England’s opening goal during their semi-final victory at UEFA Women’s Euro 2021, an amazing piece of teamwork.

Walsh, beloved by City fans as WonderWalsh, now ranks among Sarina Wiegman’s England squad sheets as an integral member.

Keira Walsh

Keira Walsh has won over Manchester City supporters with her love, passion and devotion for the club. At just 22 years old, she has managed to carve out her own path into football’s top tier: abandoning badminton and cricket for football; joining Blackburn Rovers’ youth team as one of its rising talents before becoming one of its key members and an integral member of their squad.

Walsh was an integral component of England’s Euro 2022 victory and caused havoc for opposing defences during SheBelieves Cup, but was stretchered off during the group stage of this year’s World Cup with what seemed to be a serious knee injury – tests are yet to confirm, but many believe she may have ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Regardless of this setback, Walsh was selected into England’s 23-player squad whereas Beth Mead from Arsenal who suffered an ACL tear has been left off due to her continued playing positional play vs her teammates.

Leah Williamson

Leah Williamson has become yet another high-profile England player to miss out on this summer’s World Cup due to injury. She suffered an ACL rupture last November, which will make it unlikely that she can make it for this summer’s competition in Australia and New Zealand.

Sarina Wiegman may feel disinclined to drop Euro 2022 champion Millie Bright of Chelsea FC or Manchester City fullback Lucy Bronze due to their performances this season in her side; both players may feature at some stage during this tournament.

Wiegman could team these left-footed players together as centre defenders if needed, although Bronze is better suited to playing on the right-side of defence. If neither are available, Wiegman may opt for Birmingham City defender Lianne Sanderson or uncapped Manchester United player Lucy Parker instead.

Beth Mead

Beth Mead was not included in Sarina Wiegman’s 23-woman squad for Australia and New Zealand tournament. Mead ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament last November, making recovery an uphill struggle before World Cup tournament started.

She showed her resilience against Aston Villa on Sunday and Wiegman was impressed with her performance; the decision must be made keeping in mind the player’s long-term recovery needs.

Leah Williamson and Fran Kirby return after knee operations, while Manchester City goalkeeper Khiara Keating and Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Grace Clinton make their senior debuts. Manchester United forward Nikita Parris and Tottenham defender Jess Park join Emily Ramsey on standby status.

Fran Kirby

Fran Kirby will strengthen England’s squad against Belgium for Nations League matches by scoring two crucial goals during Euro 2022 victory and recovering from knee surgery.

Last weekend she returned to action for Arsenal in their 2-1 win against Aston Villa, coming off the bench and setting up Alessia Russo’s winner. However, World Cup will elude her as manager Sarina Wiegman has decided October’s double header against Belgium is too soon for the Euros Golden Boot and Player of the Tournament recipient.

Kirby was instrumental to England’s creativity during their strong run at Euro 2016, so her absence will be felt keenly by coach Wiegman. However, with Jill Scott and Ella Toone as available replacements as well as Millie Bright, who was their back-up at Euros. Wiegman may also consider Manchester United’s Maya Le Tissier.
