Martin Odegaard has become the latest Arsenal player to commit their future by signing a contract extension until 2028. The Norwegian captain both his Premier League side Arsenal and Norway national team; signing such an agreement was for him a no-brainer decision.

Odegaard impressed greatly while on loan at Arsenal last season and will now reportedly sign a permanent deal for an estimated fee of PS20m, possibly debuting against Chelsea this coming Saturday.

The Norwegian’s journey to Arsenal

Odegaard has made himself known in north London since becoming a regular starter under Mikel Arteta. The Norway midfielder has taken well to his new surroundings and feels at home at a club that he had always dreamed of playing for.

Mikel Arteta has seen him take his game to another level under Mikel Arteta, taking on greater responsibilities both with and without the ball in advanced areas of the pitch. This increased responsibility has transformed his attacking threat around opponents’ boxes: this season alone he has attempted nearly twice as many shots per 90 minutes than previously and generated three times as many expected goals, earning him a place on this year’s Ballon d’Or shortlist.

Odegaard may not yet be familiar to Arsenal fans, but his new contract gives him a chance to become one. Furthermore, it will ensure he remains part of Arteta’s long-term plans at Emirates Stadium.

Odegaard has been an essential factor in Arsenal’s defensive phase this season, producing more pressure per 90 minutes than any other side in the Premier League largely thanks to his relentless work rate and willingness to run vast distances to disrupt opposition centre-backs.

Odegaard has become one of the best players in the league when it comes to creating opportunities for other players, regularly linking with Bukayo Saka on the right and Gabriel Martinelli in the left inside channel to produce chances for others. Additionally, this season he has scored more goals than last season – an amazing transformation.

His ambitions for the future

Odegaard has an ambitious goal for Arsenal: lifting trophies as captain.

The Norwegian has made it abundantly clear he is committed to the long-term future of Arsenal. He is settled in North London (“an easy life”), feeling at home there. By setting down roots firmly he has avoided living a nomadic lifestyle that could undermine his confidence.

He has become an indispensable component of Norway, playing an instrumental role last season when Mikel Arteta launched their surprise title challenge. Declan Rice found him inspiring as an individual as well as team-mate; Arsenal captain Theo Walcott found him an admirable blend of leadership and quality, believing they will form an effective partnership in their engine room. They have already begun training together during pre-season.
