How to Solve a Problem Like Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire has become the focus of criticism from certain sections of Man United fanbase and social media trolls since Erik ten Hag was appointed manager.

Maguire’s errors stem largely from his inability to assess and make good judgements based on scans of the field, leading to numerous issues for him including:

1. Inadequate Scanning

Harry Maguire of Manchester United stands out as an easy target on social media for defamatory comments due to being one of the most expensive players in football and captaining what may well be its most iconic team.

Maguire is an integral member of Gareth Southgate’s England squad, while being widely appreciated within it. However, for passive Manchester United supporters or Twitter trolls he is nothing more than an outsize clown incapable of providing defence.

These criticisms stem largely from Maguire’s tendency to try and be the hero on his own, leaving teammates such as De Gea and Fred exposed. Part of Maguire’s problem lies in his inability to effectively assess his surroundings and make accurate assessments based on what he sees.

2. Inefficient Decision Making

Organizations need to make efficient decisions whether in the boardroom or on the field. Ineffective decision making saps energy out of meetings, frustrates participants and yields inferior business outcomes.

Maguire arrived at United with high hopes, expecting him to be both an authoritative defender and modern ball-playing centre-back, but has fallen far short. His performance against Brighton and Brentford last season demonstrated why Erik ten Hag decided to remove him as captain.

At England’s recent defeat by Germany, 30-year-old England midfielder Luke Shaw was jeered each time he touched the ball due to poor scanning skills and decision-making during possession, leaving himself vulnerable against attacks from behind and giving strikers opportunities.

3. Tightening Up Too Much

Maguire would often display an excellent balance of strength and timing that enabled him to counter the tricky forwards or those with exceptional pace.

However, Maguire can become overly anxious when confronted by opposing players and can become overly rigid in his approach to them – which often exposes what’s really going on behind the scenes.

Maguire demonstrated his character when confronted by Jay Rodriguez during Manchester United’s draw with Burnley on Tuesday night. Maguire got caught up on Rodriguez’s run, yet instead of staying with him he overcommitted towards Poulsen allowing Rodriguez to cut across him and score the equaliser for Burnley’s basement club – nearly leading to his sending-off; instead only receiving a yellow card instead.

4. Failing to Hold Position

Maguire has always struggled to remain in his position on the pitch. As a traditionalist central defender who relies more on strength than agility to win close quarter duels, his inability to hold position has long been an issue for him.

Maguire once stood as one of the most reliable centre-backs in football. However, nowadays he lingers deeper and allows opponents to pass into. Although this might seem inconsequential, every loss in intensity provides opponents more avenues of attack against England while undermining its ability to press high up the pitch.

Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof may be better options, but United captain is facing an uphill struggle to earn his place within Erik ten Hag’s team. To remain relevant he needs to scan more field and focus on playing to his strengths.

5. Fouling Opponents

Maguire can excel when deployed as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backline – as in the 2020-21 season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer when stationed deeper alongside Victor Lindelof – tracking intelligent forwards and contesting aerial duels. When asked to move higher up the pitch against PSG and Heung-min Son however, leaving Maguire exposed.

Maguire was caught out early against Brighton when Jesus made an unexpected run behind him and started approaching the halfway line. Realising he was being overtaken, Maguire made the errorous choice to foul Jesus instead of allowing him to continue forwards – an action which earned him a yellow card – yet another indication of how Maguire has fallen out of step with what his manager expected of him.
